Red Ribbon Week 2017
Red Ribbon Week is an alcohol, tobacco, and other drug and violence prevention awareness campaign observed annually in October in the United States.
The district invited a group of 5th grade student leaders from each of the elementary and middle school campuses to attend the 2017 Red Ribbon Rally at the Capital.
We got some good ideas to bring back to the campus for activities to use during our campus sponsored Red Ribbon week. Here (left) is the outstanding group of students that DSISD sent to represent. Below are the Sycamore reps.
Some interesting experiences the kids had included writing letters to their congressmen about their thoughts about drugs, alcohol and violence prevention.
Activities back on campus included first providing the 3rd-5th grade teachers with lesson plans via a google classroom for activities that would be easy to utilize within the classroom setting with a Health-Science-Critical Thinking Skills focus. Here are the lesson plans I put together for my K-2nd grade teachers. I created a pre- and post-test via google forms for any classroom that would like to measure what their students learned during the week. I created an assessments of 4 questions each for my intermediate grade levels. The results of the intermediate student responses are here:
Feedback from the teaching staff was that the week was a success with dress up days each day to add some fun while gaining awareness. In addition, with a little help from my parent volunteers, a school wide scavenger hunt was created with stations for a little extra fun that included a #kindness photo booth, an I PLEDGE wall and positive messages written by classrooms in chalk outside. Some of the classrooms created dances and songs and tweeted those out. Below is a snap shot of Ms. Johnson and Ms. Roye's classes participating in some of the activities. What an amazing team of student and teacher leaders!
